Sugar Pine Point by Boat — Ehrman Mansion & State Park

West Shore California state park anchored by the 1903 Ehrman Mansion. The northernmost destination on the South Lake Tahoe boat day. Long cruise, historic payoff.

What & Where

Sugar Pine Point State Park is on Lake Tahoe's West Shore, north of Meeks Bay and D.L. Bliss State Park. The park preserves 2,000 acres of lakefront forest, with miles of shoreline, hiking trails, and — its centerpiece — the Ehrman Mansion, a 1903 lakefront estate built by financier Isaias Hellman.

From South Lake Tahoe marinas, Sugar Pine Point is the longest practical destination for a same-day boat trip. The cruise is ~60-75 minutes one-way, making it strictly a full-day commitment.

The Ehrman Mansion

Isaias Hellman was one of late-19th-century California's wealthiest financiers — banking, real estate, water rights. In 1903 he built a summer estate on Sugar Pine Point, a 11,700-square-foot mansion in California Arts and Crafts style. The Ehrman family used the property as their lakefront summer home for over 60 years before deeding it to the state in 1965.

The mansion is preserved as a historic landmark and museum, with guided tours available during summer months. The grounds include the boathouse (with original wooden boats), gardens, and trails through old-growth forest.

The Boat Approach

From any South Lake Tahoe marina, cruise north along the West Shore. The route passes Emerald Bay's entrance (you can skip the bay itself or stop in), D.L. Bliss State Park, Rubicon Bay, Meeks Bay, and finally reaches Sugar Pine Point.

The Sugar Pine Point area has a public boat dock (small, limited slips) and adjacent open-water anchorage. For most rental boats, anchoring offshore 200-300 feet and dinghying or swimming to shore is the practical approach.

What to See

The Ehrman Mansion Tour

Guided interior tours typically run summer months. ~$5-10/person. The mansion is preserved in early-1900s condition — original furniture, Hellman family memorabilia, period decor. 30-45 minute tours.

The Boathouse

The mansion's boathouse contains original wooden Lake Tahoe boats from the early 1900s — including some of the lake's oldest preserved watercraft. Free to view from the exterior; sometimes accessible during tour days.

General Phipps Cabin

A historic cabin on the property dating to 1872 — predating the Ehrman Mansion by 30+ years. Considered Lake Tahoe's oldest surviving structure.

Trails

Multiple hiking trails on the property, ranging from short interpretive walks to longer hikes connecting to Meeks Bay (~6 mile loop). Old-growth pine forest with rare specimen trees.

Shoreline

The state park has several beaches and shoreline picnic areas. Less developed than south shore beaches; more "wild Lake Tahoe" feel.

Logistics

Park Fees

Day-use fee for land arrivals (~$10-15/vehicle). Boat arrivals don't typically pay vehicle fees but mansion tour fees apply.

Operating Schedule

Park open year-round. Mansion tours typically Memorial Day through Labor Day, weekends only outside of peak summer. Check current schedules.
