The Species

Mackinaw Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush)

The flagship Lake Tahoe fish. Native to Canadian lakes; introduced to Lake Tahoe in 1885. Now self-sustaining in the lake's deep waters.

• Mid-lake (around 1,645 ft deepest point). Off Crystal Bay; accessible from South Lake Tahoe on full-day trips.
• D.L. Bliss canyons (west side). Productive structure for Mackinaw.
• Cave Rock area (east side). Deep water close to dramatic shoreline.

Rainbow & Brown Trout Areas

• Near tributary mouths (Taylor Creek, Trout Creek)
• Along the east shore in cooler months
• Shallower nearshore water in early morning

Kokanee Areas (Fall)

• Open lake during summer (target schools)

Gear & Tactics

Downrigger Trolling (Standard Mackinaw)

Heavy weights drop your lure to specific depths (100-300 ft for Mackinaw). Without downriggers you can't reach the depths where the fish are.

Flashers + Spoons or Bait

Large flashers (8-12 inch) attract attention; trailing lures or bait close the deal. Common Lake Tahoe combinations: flasher + minnow plug, flasher + live minnow on hook.

Live Bait

Minnows (where legal — California has limits), worms, salmon eggs. Bait shops in Stateline and South Lake Tahoe stock options.

Fly Fishing

What do I do with the fish I catch?

Most charter operators clean and fillet your catch. You take the meat home (or back to your hotel kitchen). Mackinaw is excellent eating — firm white meat. Kokanee salmon is also excellent.

Are there fishing-only restrictions on parts of the lake?

Yes — Emerald Bay's 5 mph zone applies to fishing boats too. No spear fishing in some areas. Native species protections apply to Lahontan cutthroat (rare but native).

Can I fish from shore?

Yes, from public beaches and shorelines. Most shore fishing targets rainbow trout in nearshore water. Bank fishing isn't as productive as deep-water trolling but works for casual anglers.

How big do Lake Tahoe Mackinaw really get?

Lake Tahoe Mackinaw exceed 30 pounds. Lake record approaches 40 pounds. Most charter-caught fish are 5-15 pounds; trophy fish (20+ lb) come out regularly enough to be the dream.
