Why D.L. Bliss Is Worth the Cruise

D.L. Bliss State Park occupies several miles of West Shore lake frontage. The park's most boat-accessible feature is Calawee Cove — a sheltered cove with sandy beach, exceptional water clarity, and granite-boulder scenery that rivals Sand Harbor on the East Shore.

What makes D.L. Bliss the natural extension of an Emerald Bay cruise is geography: it's the next major destination north. Many full-day rentals do the route Emerald Bay → D.L. Bliss → return, hitting both of Lake Tahoe's most-celebrated lakeside destinations in one day.

The water clarity here, in the section north of Emerald Bay and along Rubicon Point, regularly delivers 70+ feet of visibility. On the right day, anchored over 30 feet of water, you can see the lake bottom in detail. Few places in North America offer freshwater clarity like this.

How to Approach By Boat

Calawee Cove sits at the southern end of the park, immediately north of the rocky points that frame Emerald Bay's outer entrance. Approach at slow speed — there are submerged granite boulders in this area. Anchor in the cove's sandy bottom area, 100-200 feet offshore.

The cove is relatively small. On busy summer days, anchorage spots can be limited — early arrival matters. Weekday mornings you may have it largely to yourself.

Beyond Calawee Cove

The park's shoreline continues north for several miles. Smaller anchorages exist along the way, though most are exposed and not well-suited to anchored swimming. Calawee is the primary destination; everything else along the D.L. Bliss shoreline is a slow-cruise scenery experience.

What You Can Do On Shore

Rubicon Trail (10 miles of lakeside hiking)

The Rubicon Trail runs through the park along the lakefront — one of Lake Tahoe's premier hiking trails. From Calawee Cove you can hike north along the trail for as long as you want and turn back. Even a 20-30 minute hike rewards you with classic lake-view photo angles.

Balancing Rock

A famous granite boulder perched precariously atop a smaller rock, accessible via a short interpretive trail from the park's main road. Reaching it from a boat-anchor at Calawee requires a longer walk up from the cove, but the boulder is one of Lake Tahoe's iconic features.

Rubicon Point

The southernmost point of the park, jutting into the lake just north of Emerald Bay's outer entrance. From the water, the granite cliffs of Rubicon Point are dramatic. Inland from the point, the historic Rubicon Point Light (a small navigation lighthouse) sits on the cliff.

Can I land my boat at D.L. Bliss?

There's no public-use dock inside the park accessible to rental boats. Beach landing in Calawee Cove with small boats is theoretically possible but discouraged — the cove's sandy beach is a heavily-used swim and picnic area. Anchor offshore.

Is there a fee to anchor at D.L. Bliss?

No. Anchoring offshore of state park waters is free. The day-use fee only applies to vehicles arriving by car at the parking lot.

How crowded does Calawee Cove get?

Summer Saturdays can fill up by mid-morning. Weekday mornings can be nearly empty. The park's parking lot fills first, so most arrivals are by water — meaning boater crowds peak around midday.

Can I see Vikingsholm from D.L. Bliss?

Not directly — Emerald Bay's entrance is south of D.L. Bliss, and Vikingsholm sits inside the bay. You can see the Vikingsholm shoreline area from outside the bay if you're south of Rubicon Point, but you need to enter the bay itself to see the castle clearly.

What's the water temperature?

Lake Tahoe water at D.L. Bliss runs cold even in summer — high 50s to mid-60s in June, low 70s by August. The exceptional clarity means cold water; cold water means clarity. They go together.

Are there bears at D.L. Bliss?

Yes. Bear activity is common in the park. Food storage rules apply. From a boat-anchored visit, this mostly means: don't leave food on the beach unattended.
