The Most Historic Marina on Lake Tahoe

Camp Richardson Resort dates to the 1920s. The Camp Richardson family bought the property in 1921 and developed it as a Tahoe destination — lodge, cabins, marina, beach. Through the 1920s and 30s it was one of the lake's premier rustic-luxury destinations. Today the resort is operated under U.S. Forest Service concession and retains much of its historic character — the original lodge building, cabin construction style, and lakefront layout.

For rental customers, the implication is atmospheric. Camp Richardson feels different from Ski Run's modern downtown vibe or Tahoe Keys' planned-community geography. It's old-Tahoe at the marina experience level — wooden buildings, ice cream parlor, historic photos in the lodge, the sense that boats have been launching from this exact dock for 100 years.

Beacon Bar & Grill — On-Site Dock-and-Dine

Beacon is the historic boat-in restaurant on the lake. Outdoor lakefront seating, classic American menu, full bar. The signature dish-experience is the "Rum Runner" cocktail — the unofficial Lake Tahoe summer drink, invented at Beacon decades ago. Lake Tahoe boaters from all marinas know about Beacon; renters from Camp Richardson get to walk to it.

Rental Fleet Character

Camp Richardson's fleet leans toward the casual end of the rental spectrum:

• Pontoons: Mid-size pontoons (typically 8-12 passenger), often with bathrooms.
• Kayaks and paddleboards: Strong selection — Camp Richardson's beach concession is one of the South Shore's go-to SUP/kayak rental spots.
• Fishing boats: Some specialty fishing rentals, given the historic fishing-resort character of Camp Richardson.

Generally fewer powerboats than Ski Run or Tahoe Keys; Camp Richardson is more associated with relaxed family-style rentals than aggressive water sports days.

Best Destinations from Camp Richardson

Emerald Bay (the close-in trip)

20-25 minutes one-way. Camp Richardson is tied with Tahoe Keys for the closest South Shore launch to Emerald Bay. Easy half-day or full-day Emerald Bay trips.

Pope & Baldwin Beach

5-10 minutes. Camp Richardson is literally adjacent to these beaches. The shortest cruise to a Tahoe sandy beach you can do.

Fallen Leaf Lake

Not from the marina (Fallen Leaf is a separate lake), but Camp Richardson's broader resort is the gateway to Fallen Leaf Lake's recreational area. Not a boat-rental destination but worth knowing about.

Tallac Historic Site

Multi-Activity Day Format

Camp Richardson is uniquely suited to the "boat + everything else" day. Common pattern:

1. Morning bike rentals on the Tahoe South Shore bike path (Camp Richardson is on the trail).
2. Lunch at Beacon.
3. Afternoon kayak or pontoon rental.
4. Evening at the lodge fire pit or ice cream parlor.

Few other South Shore marinas support this format. Camp Richardson does.

• Walk to beach: The beach is steps from the marina parking. Direct boat-to-sand transitions.
• Seasonal operations: Some Camp Richardson rental services run summer only. Confirm operating dates for shoulder-season trips.
• Crowds: Summer weekends see heavy resort activity. Weekday rentals significantly calmer.

Camp Richardson Marina vs. Other South Shore Marinas

• vs. Tahoe Keys: Both close to Emerald Bay; Camp Richardson has more atmospheric character, Tahoe Keys has larger/newer fleet.
• vs. Ski Run: Camp Richardson is more relaxed and historic; Ski Run is more powerboat-focused and downtown.
• vs. Zephyr Cove: Camp Richardson is best for West Shore (Emerald Bay), Zephyr Cove for East Shore.

The Historic Resort Setting

Camp Richardson is more than a marina — it's a historic Tahoe resort dating to the 1920s. The marina sits within the Camp Richardson Resort complex, which includes hotel cabins, a hotel building, restaurants, a beach, ice cream shop, and the famous Beacon Bar & Grill. Walking the resort grounds before or after a boat day is part of the experience.

The Beacon Bar & Grill

Beacon is one of Lake Tahoe's most-loved boat-in restaurants. It sits 30 feet from the water with its own dock. After your rental, you can pull up, tie off, and walk in for a Rum Runner (Beacon's signature drink) and a meal on the deck. Reservations on weekends are essential.

The Beach

Camp Richardson's beach is one of the South Shore's better family beaches — sandy, calm waters protected by the bay geometry, and adjacent to the Pope Beach complex via a walking trail. If your group includes non-boaters, they can spend the day at the beach while you're on the water.

Fleet Range

Camp Richardson Marina rents pontoons, ski boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and notably sailboats (uncommon on the South Shore). The sailboat fleet is the marina's distinctive offering — if you specifically want a sailboat day, Camp Richardson is your option.

Location Trade-offs

Camp Richardson is on the California side, 15-20 minutes west of the casinos by car. The trade-off: more authentic Tahoe atmosphere, less walking-distance lodging. Most Camp Richardson boaters either stay on-site at the resort or drive in for the day.

Routes from Camp Richardson

Camp Richardson is geometrically close to Pope Beach (5 min) and Emerald Bay (15-20 min) — both natural destinations. From here, the West Shore (Vikingsholm, D.L. Bliss, Rubicon Bay) is closer than from any other South Shore marina. For an East Shore day (Bonsai Rock, Sand Harbor), other marinas are closer.
