How to Use This Map
Lake Tahoe is shaped roughly like an oval — 22 miles long (north-south) and 12 miles wide (east-west) — with 72 miles of shoreline. From South Lake Tahoe's three working marinas, every direction has good destinations, but the right pick depends on your rental window (half-day vs. full-day), what you want to do (swim, BBQ, photos, fish), and the day's wind conditions.

The Three South Shore Launch Marinas
Your starting point determines a lot. The three main South Shore marinas:

From the East side (Zephyr Cove, Lakeside): faster access to East Shore destinations (Cave Rock, Secret Cove, Skunk Harbor, Sand Harbor) and a longer cruise to Emerald Bay.
From the West/California side (Ski Run, Tahoe Keys, Camp Richardson): faster access to Emerald Bay, Pope Beach, Baldwin Beach, D.L. Bliss, and the West Shore destinations.
South Shore Beaches & Coves
The south shore itself — east-to-west, from Nevada to California — has these accessible beaches:

West Shore — From Pope Beach to D.L. Bliss
The "West Shore" of Lake Tahoe technically starts north of Emerald Bay, but from South Lake Tahoe the natural extension of the south shore goes around the western tip and into D.L. Bliss, Rubicon Bay, and onward.

Quick-Pick by Rental Window
2-Hour Rental (jet ski, hourly pontoon)
Stay close. From Ski Run or Tahoe Keys: Ski Beach, Lakeview Commons, Pope Beach. From Zephyr Cove: Nevada Beach, Round Hill Pines, Cave Rock. Don't try to cruise far — you'll spend the whole window in transit.
4-Hour / Half-Day Rental
One major anchorage plus a smaller stop. From the CA side: Emerald Bay attempt is feasible but tight (40 min there + anchor time + 40 min back = 4 hours used). Better: Pope or Baldwin Beach + anchor time + Tallac Historic Site visit. From Zephyr Cove: East Shore cluster (Cave Rock, Skunk Harbor, Whale Beach) works perfectly.
8-Hour / Full-Day Rental
Now you have options. From CA side: Emerald Bay + D.L. Bliss + Sugar Pine = the classic west-side loop. From Zephyr Cove: East Shore loop to Sand Harbor and back, with multiple anchorages. Or do a Tahoe-wide circuit — Emerald Bay one direction, Sand Harbor the other, picking the best one based on wind that day.

- Sunset Beach Bar & Grille — Zephyr Cove Marina, casual lakeside.
- Beacon Bar & Grill — Camp Richardson, historic boat-in destination.
- Riva Grill — Ski Run Marina, sit-down lakefront.
- Sunnyside — West Shore north of Homewood, classic Tahoe dock-and-dine.
- West Shore Cafe — Homewood, premium West Shore dining.
- Garwoods Grill — Carnelian Bay (North Shore), Wet Woody famously, a long cruise but legendary.
Wind & Conditions
Lake Tahoe's prevailing winds vary by season and time of day:
- Morning glass (8 AM–noon). Best for the longer cruises — Emerald Bay, Sand Harbor, D.L. Bliss. Calmer water means faster effective travel.
- Afternoon chop (noon–5 PM in summer). Wind usually picks up from the west. East Shore stays more protected; West Shore destinations get bumpier.
- East wind days (less common). Reverses the dynamic. West Shore becomes the calm side.
- Smoke days (fire season). Visibility can drop. Marinas monitor conditions and will brief you on whether the cruise plan needs to shift.
