Operating a Motorboat

• 16+: Can operate with valid California Boater Card (required for all operators of motorized vessels)

Personal Watercraft (Jet Skis)

Age Rules by State

Lake Tahoe spans California and Nevada. Both states have similar but not identical age rules for boat operation. The rules apply to the operator of motorized vessels — passengers can be any age.

California Rules

In California, the legal minimum age to operate a motorized vessel of more than 15 horsepower is 16 years old. Operators under 16 are not legally allowed to operate at all, even with a parent on board. Operators born after January 1, 1980 must have a California Boater Card. The card requires a short online or in-person course and exam (no minimum age for getting the card, but the operating age minimum still applies).

Nevada Rules

In Nevada, anyone 14-17 can operate a motorized vessel with supervision by an adult 18+. Operators born after January 1, 1983 need to have a Nevada Boater Education Card. The certification can be earned through an online course.

Rental Operator Policies

Most rental operators have their own age requirements that exceed state law:

• Minimum operator age: Typically 21+ for high-performance boats; 18+ for standard pontoons and ski boats. Some operators require 25+ for certain boat types.
• Jet ski operation: Almost universally 18+ for personal watercraft, regardless of state law allowing younger operators.
• Damage deposits: Operators typically require a credit card in the operator's name, which often functionally requires 18+ for booking.

Passenger Age Rules

No minimum age for passengers, but children under 13 are required to wear life jackets at all times while underway on both states (Federal rule). Most rental operators provide child PFDs in multiple sizes; verify the boat has appropriate sizes for your children before launching.

Kayaks and Paddleboards

Kayaks and SUPs are not motorized, so no operator age requirement applies legally. However, most rental operators require renters to be 18+ (the renter is responsible for the equipment). Children can paddle/ride as passengers or on their own with an adult-renter accepting responsibility.

Birthday-Operator Loophole
